RPi Zero Timelapse Camera

Timelapse turns one day of photos into 1.5 minutes of video. One photo is taken every 10 seconds from midnight to midnight. That's 8,640 photos per day.

Note: Not all days were uploaded because each video is about 100MB and would take up too much room on the server.

5/28/2020 - There was a solid car accident in front of the Newport West around 3pm. Nobody was injured, but at least one of the vehicles was disabled. I took a timelapse video of the tow truck loading the SUV up for transport. This got me thinking about setting up a fixed timelapse camera in our living room window.

5/31/2020 - Started building the Adafruit timelapse camera using a Raspberry Pi Zero W with a camera module and the official RPi Zero case with camera lid. The build went quickly. That night the news covered quite a bit of vandalism in DC linked to the Black Lives Matter protests. I wanted to make sure the camera was filming before we went to bed to capture any activity.

6/1/2020 - First official day of filming. Still working on getting settings right. Graffiti gets cleaned off the black door to the garbage bins across the street. 7-11 puts up boards to protect their windows after riots last night smashed several businesses in our neighborhood.

6/2/2020 - Messed up the data transfer and lost photos for the last half of the day. :(

6/3/2020 - Changed the image capture dimensions from 1280x720 to 1280x960 to capture more upper and lower parts of the window.

6/4/2020 - Regular day.

6/5/2020

6/6/2020 - Saturday was a big day for Black Lives Matter protests. A pretty big march went down Rhode Island Ave around 6pm.

6/7/2020

6/8/2020 - Heat from the sun made the mounting clay soft, and the camera pealed away from the window. Added Lego parts to stabilize camera position, clay to attach to window, and black construction paper to hide reflections in the window.

6/18/2020 - A hiccup in the Mac Mini 2 download process on the 16th meant the files were not deleted. The photos from the 16th and 17th filled the boot partition to 100% (66 photos short of finishing the 17th). The full partition froze the RPi Zero. Had to turn off the Zero, pull the micro SD card, transferred all photos and cleared the drive. Once reset the Zero booted up and started taking photos again.

6/19/2020 - A semi-truck broke down in front of 7-11 before dawn. You can see the main cab was swapped out as the sun was rising.

6/20/2020 - An industrial hauler stopped outside from 5:50am to 7:10am. We're not sure what they were doing.

6/24/2020 - EMT vehicles showed up at 4:40pm to take care of someone in our building.

6/27/2020 - Afternoon rain is funny, it makes the trees look like they're sad (droop).

7/02/2020 - Last one. The robot project is moving along, and I need to use the camera from this timelapse project.
