The Caribou Coffee building at the corner is being torn down and replaced with a small apartment building. Part of that building snakes back into the alley and behind the Newport West.

This is the Caribou Coffee that is going away.
March 12. Tearing down the Caribou Coffee building on the northwest corner of 14th and Rhode Island Ave NW 2015
Certainly provides a clear view of the blank wall on our building.
What will become of the little alley between our building and theirs?
March 21. Starting to tear down the walls of the back building.
Side wall down
Peek-a-boo into the back door.
Looking in from the back door.
April 1. The back stairs of the Newport West used to exit to a dark corner among walls. Now there is wide open space, and you can see over to the intersection of 14th Street and Rhode Island Ave.
You can see shadows of old staircases angled up between floors. But what is that dark little archway near the sidewalk?
Looks like a passageway from the old Caribou Coffee building down under the sidewalk toward the street?
Scary
Until recently, the red building next to the Newport West was the home of Abdo Development, the company building these new apartments.
April 11. Once a building, now a gravel pit.
Gravel
Full view of the back side of the Newport West.
Turn to the left.
At night
May 9. Dug down to the retaining wall behind the Newport West.
Standing at the back door of our building.
June 13. Pouring the base floor of the new building
The scary passageway is all plugged up now.
June 26. The new building going up.
The official DC bird is the construction crane.
July 15. First floor is looking good.
Oop, getting dizzy.
Zombie Jefferson and the giant rooster look on with anticipation.
August 27. Wait, how tall is this building supposed to be? Our apartments are rapidly losing sunlight.
September 17. Looks like they're stopping at the sixth floor.
Taking it in.
Apartments, or a prison?
September 19. Front of the new building is coming into focus.
We're taller, we win!
New graffiti on the Newport West.
November 22. Looking better with some insulation.
It really changes the look of the alley.
November 26. Soft lighting at night.
